A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch that can protect electrical circuits in the case of an overload or short circuit. Essentially, they work by detecting faults and interrupting the current flow in order to protect the circuit. A circuit breaker can be reset both manually and automatically, making them different from fuses which only work once. There are many different types of circuit breakers, ranging from ones used in individual households to ones used on circuits at a city-wide level. Types of circuit breakers are low-voltage, magnetic, thermal magnetic, common trip, medium-voltage, high-voltage, sulfur hexafluoride high-voltage, disconnecting and carbon dioxide high-voltage circuit breakers.
