Carbon Film Resistors
– Electronic Parts Sourcing
A carbon film resistor is a class of resistor that utilizes carbon film to limit electric currents to a specific level. Carbon film resistors are often utilized in electronic circuits and in devices that require electronic circuits. Additionally, they function as a resistive material to the electric current, thus allowing the film to block some amount of electric current. The makeup of a carbon film resistor is a carbon film or carbon layer on a ceramic substrate. An insulating material, the ceramic substrate, prevents heat from flowing through them. Therefore, these resistors can withstand higher temperatures without any damage.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Carbon Film Resistors
There are various advantages as well as disadvantages to carbon film resistors. Some of the advantages include less noise that is generated than the alternative carbon composition resistor. Along with less noise, there is also the advantage of low tolerance, low cost, and a wide operating range. The major disadvantage, however, is a high negative temperature coefficient of resistance.
Applications of Carbon Film Resistors
The main applications for carbon film resistors include radars, x-rays, and power supplies. Other typical uses for carbon film resistors are in high voltage and temperature applications. The operating temperatures for these types of applications can be up to 15kV with a nominal temperature of 350°C. Some examples of this are in high voltage power supplies, radars, x-rays and lasers.
