In February 2015, the British aerospace, defense, and information security firm BAE Systems was awarded a new contract by the United States Navy. The initial value of the award is USD$28.4 million. With a duration of nine years, the grand total of the contract is an estimated USD$187.4 million. The nine-year DDG VI Radio Communications System contract calls for BAE Systems to provide systems engineering, production, and integration for 12 DDG 51 Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers and one DDG 1000 Zumwalt-class guided missile destroyer.

Named after Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, the Arleigh Burke-class of guided missile destroyers is the U.S. Navy’s first class of destroyer built around the Aegis Combat System and the SPY-1D multi-function passive electronically scanned array radar. Costing over USD$1.8 billion to construct, there are currently 62 completed destroyers with 13 remaining for planned construction.

The DDG 1000 Zumwalt guided missile destroyer is also a class of U.S. Navy destroyers designed as a multifunctional stealth ship. Specializing on land attacks, the vessel has an appearance that is similar to ironclad warships and costs over USD$3.4 billion to construct. Currently, there is one completed ship with two others in commission.

Having had the Radio Communications System contract since 1985, BAE Systems has worked on every DDG 51-class destroyer in the U.S. Navy’s fleet which includes the USS John Finn—totaling 63 new ships over the course of 29 years. Work done by BAE Systems will be a part of the U.S. Navy’s new construction program. This program is designed to field advanced capability new surface combatant ships for the U.S. Navy fleet.
