Honeywell to Repair US Army’s CH-47 Chinook T-55 Engines Under $30m Contract

Honeywell Aerospace has recently been awarded a contract to provide additional engine overhaul and repair support for its T-55 turboshaft engine, which is currently being used to power the United States Army’s CH-47 Chinook helicopters. Under this contract, which is valued at $30 million, Honeywell Aerospace will be responsible for ensuring that the turboshaft engines will be performing with the reliability, power, and payload capability necessary for a wide range of missions conducted by the Army’s cargo helicopter.

"With more than 12 million hours of operation on both the CH-47 and MH-47 fleets, our T-55 turboshaft engine has proved it's prepared to support Chinook operators wherever the mission takes them,”

said Carey Smith, president of Honeywell Aerospace Defense and Space.

"Our commitment extends well beyond the initial delivery of our engines. Our team at the Honeywell Greer facility is equipped with the repair and overhaul expertise to limit the downtime of the Chinook and maintain the extraordinary level of performance that the US Army has come to expect from the T-55."

To date, Honeywell Aerospace has produced over 6,000 T55 engines, which are reported to have logged around 12 million hours of operation on the MH-47 and CH-47 Chinook helicopters. Honeywell’s T-55 turboshaft engine has proven itself to be a valuable resource for the diversity of Army cargo missions, ranging from operations in extremely frigid Polar Regions of Alaska to operating in hot environments such as in Afghanistan. The overhaul and repair work is planned to be carried out at Honeywell’s plant in South Carolina, United States.
