The Raytheon Company, a major American industrial corporation and defense contractor, has successfully tested its most recent Excalibur N5 projectile during a live guided-flight demonstration at Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona. The Excalibur N5 projectile, which is being utilized by several militaries such as the United States Army and United States Marine Corps, is a naval variant of the already existing Excalibur precision projectile. At the beginning of the week, the International Airlines Group (IAG) announced that they have placed an order for a total of 31 Airbus aircraft which are worth around USD$5 billion. IAG owns both British Airways and Iberia. The purchase is made up of 3 wide-body A330-200s, 8 A350-900s, and 20 A320neos. IAG said that the A350s and A330s will be used by the Spanish airline Iberia for its fleet modernization to serve new long-haul routes and the 20 A320neos will be used for their own fleet replacement. Rockwell Collins has successfully performed the first live, risk-reduction flight utilizing production fit, form, and function F/A-18 ground and airborne equipment from the Common Range Integrated Instrumentation System (CRIIS). The United States Navy has awarded BAE Systems a contract to carry out phased maintenance for the USS Iwo Jima (LHD7), a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship. This contract is valued at $26.8 million, with possible additional options which if exercised, would potentially raise the total value of the contract to $32.6 million. Under the contract, BAE Systems will be expected to perform a wide range of services including ship alterations, habitability upgrades, repairs to auxiliary and ventilation systems, as well as carrying out tank and structural repairs and preservation. The beginning of the phased maintenance will start on August 31 of 2015, with the end date of the maintenance expected to be on July 1 of 2016. Read more >>
