Intersil released an article discussing how the company is planning to introduce high current buck boost regulators for their battery powered portables. These buck boost regulators are considered to be ISL91127 and ISL91128. These new buck boost family devices had 4.5A switches which brings efficiency percentages up to 96 as well as having a compact footprint ideal for providing system power. Read more >>
Scientists are always looking at ways to improve the way the world works around us, at the University of Texas a team of physicists have discovered some of the behaviors an anatomical semiconductor can behave in, and they are predicting that they will be able to build even smaller transistors. What they discovered preceded a published study that explained the details of how a 2-dimensional semiconductor works. They found that a new material, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), is capable of giving basic binary signaling on a 1-dimensional surface. This discovery shows how much technologically advanced we have become compared to the last couple of decades. Read more >>
Since 2009, Intel Corporation has invested in the Irish ICT research institute, Tyndall. Recently, Intel has committed to providing $1.5 million in additional funds over a 3-year period in order to expand the institute’s research capabilities. Intel already has other research firms in the United States working on semiconductor materials and other innovative machinery. Regardless of the research that those firms are providing, Tyndall can provide a different viewpoint and different methods of solving problems for Intel. Intel’s confidence in Tyndall generates from the quality of work the organization provides. From the display models to photonic applications, researchers such as Dr. Jim Freer and Brian Corbett are the foundation for the top class work that Tyndall is capable of. Bernie Capraro, a research manager at Intel Ireland has made a statement regarding the effectiveness of the programme. What assures both companies of the success in their research is the expected strong communication infrastructure, as researchers at Tyndall will work directly with Intel’s researchers in Portland, leaving little room for miscommunication. Harwin, the manufacturer of some of the most reliable interconnects and PCB hardware in the industry, has just opened a new industrial center in Portsmouth. This project increased Harwin’s floor space at this location by 33%, at a cost of nearly £3m. Read more >>
On July 15th, 2016 Steve Bush wrote an article on Electronics Weekly talking about how the French semiconductor Leti is working with their research development team in order to create a 3D network chip to improve fast computing. The reason behind this is so that data and be transferred between stacked die. Another way to transfer is across die on the silicon inter-poser. Not only this is very effective for the company but it is also not too costly. Read more >>
The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently chosen a system developed in the United Kingdom which is capable of detecting and disabling unwanted drones near airports. This system is known as anti-unmanned aerial vehicle defense system, or AUDS, and was created by the collaboration of three companies: Blighter Surveillance Systems, Chess Dynamics, and Enterprise Control Systems. The AUDS will be supported by Liteye Systems in the United States. Read more >>
Jon Phillips, the Editor In Chief released an article on PC World about Samsung, its new innovative Gear Icon X earbuds. The Samsung Gear Icon X is very expensive at the price of $199. However, most would assume at this price point, the Gear Icon X is made with the audiophile in mind. But, this is not the case. These earbuds are 100% wireless with built in music storage as well as sensors. These sensors work to track and monitor heart rate and steps. As it stands, these earbuds are marketed towards the fitness person. Read more >>
Indiegogo and Arrow have partnered together to create a crowdfund-to-production platform that is aimed at supporting both of the individual technology entrepreneurs. This partnership was struck with the intention that the crowd-funded companies would be able to scale much faster than ever before in terms of bringing their products to the market. Read more >>
Qualcomm has charted a plan to bring 5G services and enhance mobile broadband. Current versions of the prototype system for the 5G New Radio (NR) speculate of a possible two stage introduction of 5G. The system operates in the sub-6GHz spectrum bands, not in the frequency bands expected of 28-65GHz. To reach this, the market has to patiently wait as new technology for the T- Centric 5G program advances that will help it reach the expected data capabilities. 5G will pave the way for changes in networking and communication standards that are sure to benefit the next generation of systems. Those beneficiaries include those in the motorized, manufacturing, and health sectors. Read more >>
A new method to mass produce semiconducting nano-particles for light-emitting displays, sensors, solar panels and biomedical applications has recently began picking up steam as a result of a demonstration by researchers at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory. While there are countless potential applications for zinc sulfide nano-particles which is a type of quantum dot that is a semiconductor, the high cost and limited availability has been the primary obstacle to their widespread use.
